About The Team
The RVYC Sailing Team is an opportunity for the growth and development of sailing and racing skills in a co-operative and supportive environment. RVYC athletes become ambassadors for our club and forge lifelong friendships through the social network of the Sailing Team.
At the helm of the RVYC Sailing Program is our award winning Coach and Sailing Program Coordinator, Stephen McBride. Stephen is assisted by Sail Canada certified coaches Jenn Grierson, Delani Hulme-Lawrence and Hannah Stevens, Erik Van Der Pol and Ian Elliott with high standards of safety and skill in teaching sailing and racing. Below is a description of each of the teams that make up the RVYC Racing Program.
Our youngest members enter the Optimist Sailing Team. Opti Team members are aged 15 and under. Typically sailors start at age 7.
The Senior Sailing Team sails double-handed in 420, 29er and 49er's and the single-handed Laser or Laser Radial. The transition occurs around age 15 when the athlete weighs 120-130lbs and has the appropriate height for the boats.
Sailing Team runs three sessions per year: January to March, April to June and September to November. Specific dates will be updated for the following session.

Opti Sailing Team - Meet Wednesdays & Sundays
Wednesday: Dry land or on water training from 4:00 - 6:30pm. This is dependent on the time of year, dry land training during standard time and water training during daylight savings.
Sunday: On water training 11:00-3:00pm (rigged, changed and ready for briefing at 11:00am) there will be a break for lunch, please bring enough food for the day.
Senior Sailing Team - Meet Tuesdays, Thursdays & Sundays
Tuesdays: Fitness session from 5:00 - 6:00pm, bonus session. Usually at the gym or shed and is not mandatory, but encouraged.
Thursdays: 4:00-6:30. Dry land or on water training. This is dependent on the time of year, dry land training during standard time and water training during daylight savings.
Sunday: On water training 11:00-4:00pm. The entire session will be on the water. Bring enough water, food and appropriate clothing.
Bring work out gear to all on water practices in ase of inclement weather.
