Basic Racing Rules with Mike Turner
Tuesday, March 3, 7pm
Bio: Mike is an active keelboat racer. He is an International level judge who has volunteered at many national and international events. He has worked at world championships and with Canada 1 for the Americas Cup.
This year he was on the water judging at events for 30 days over the summer at the RS Aero and 29er North Americans, both in the Gorge, Melges 24 North Americans in Michigan, Laser Radial Youth Worlds in Kingston (210 boats from 33 countries), Blind Fleet Racing Worlds - also in Kingston and the Hobie 16 North Americans - held at Harrison Lake. That didn't leave much time for sailing other than the normal Sunday and Wednesday racing at RVYC. This years schedule includes three world championships in South Carolina, Oregon and Florida.
Course Description: In terms of the talks themselves, the Basic Rules session is aimed at the newer racers / crews, particularly those taking part in the Thursday / Saturday casual racing. We'll talk about rules that everyone should know for our local races, not only the right of way rules but rules related to the conduct of races in general. I would welcome any questions that racers have regarding any aspect of the rules, especially if it is something that they encountered that they are not sure about.
The advanced rules session will be focused on the more tactical aspect of the rules, particularly the rules related to rounding marks. The material will be of value to those with less experience as well so I would encourage people to attend both nights if they can. Again, the best discussions come from questions posed by the those in attendance, so I hope people come with lots of questions.
