125th Opening Day Celebrations at RVYC

The 125th Opening Day Weekend was a great success! Friday evening’s dinner/dance was attended by 175 members, dignitaries and guests. The sun stayed out to enjoy the dinner outside on the patio, the Oak Bay Band played wonderful instrumental music inside the clubhouse and outside on the lawn, and Jack ‘N the Rocks kept everyone dancing until late in the evening.

The rain held off just long enough to enjoy the Saturday Opening Day ceremonies outside by the flagpole. The Honourable Judith Guichon Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia spoke to the crowd and congratulated the club on our many achievements and a successful 125 years. After the ceremonies, Commodore Gordon Wilkinson instructed everyone to “Take to their Yachts!” and the sail past began. The Sail Past tradition was lots of fun; unfortunately, the rain began during the sail past, making it a much wetter experience, but afterwards, many members either stayed on their yachts to warm their bones with a libation or two, or headed into the club to warm by the fire. The rain turned a few attendees away, but we still saw about 550 members and guests attend the Roast Beef dinner. It was especially fun seeing the little kids running around with their faces painted by member Cathy Campbell. The evening ended with DJ Freddy getting everyone out on the dance floor to finish the night with lots of fun, laughter, and of course, dancing!

Opening Day took a lot of preparation. Many members have inquired as to how much food was prepared for the big Roast Beef dinner. Below is a list of everything needed for Saturday evening:

10L of Horseradish
15L of Sour cream
700 Potatoes
60kg of Green Beans
700 pieces of Cake
15lbs of Bacon Bits
15lbs of Green Onions
18.9L of Balsamic Dressing
18.9L of Ranch Dressing
700 Dinner Rolls
8kg of Butter
347.76lb of Beef

Thank you to everyone who helped make this Opening Day weekend such a success.
