About The Team

The RVYC Sailing Team is an opportunity for the growth and development of sailing and racing skills in a co-operative and supportive environment. RVYC athletes become ambassadors for our club and forge lifelong friendships through the social network of the Sailing Team.

At the helm of the RVYC Sailing Program is our award winning Coach and Sailing Program Coordinator, Stephen McBride. Stephen is assisted by Sail Canada certified coaches Jenn Grierson, Delani Hulme-Lawrence and Hannah Stevens (Optimists), Erik Van Der Pol (Lasers) and Kristine Williams (Double Handed) with high standards of safety and skill in teaching sailing and racing. Below is a description of each of the teams that make up the RVYC Racing Program.

Our youngest members enter the Optimist Sailing Team. Opti Team members are aged 15 and under. Typically sailors start at age 7.
The Senior Sailing Team sails double-handed in 420, 29er and 49er's and the single-handed Laser or Laser Radial. The transition occurs around age 15 when the athlete weighs 120-130lbs and has the appropriate height for the boats.

Sailing Team runs three sessions per year: January to March, April to June and September to November. Specific dates will be updated for the following session.

School Sailing Program

Introduce your class to sailing in an afternoon or participate in a custom learn to sail program.
The Royal Victoria Yacht Club offers school sailing programs for classes ranging from Grade 5 to 12. Choose from a variety of options including a three hour introduction to sailing session or create a custom program to meet your needs. The cost starts at $20 per participant for each three hour session. If you are looking to complete a CANSail level there is an additional $18 certification fee.
Public school sailing programs are a great way to teach students teamwork, sportsmanship, and critical thinking skills. Basic and introductory lessons are key components of the Long Term Athlete Development model as they fit the Active Start component of the model and encourage active and healthy living within our community. We look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your students and to get out for an exciting day on the water.
