Winter Around the Buoys Race #4, January
31, 2010
When we got out on the water Sunday morning there wasn’t any sign of a breeze. After bobbing around the committee boat for a while praising the lack of rain, we noticed the flag at Gonzales had some life to it. Soon after the wind could be seen coming across the water from the west. It filled in nicely and we got a good first race in with a significant ebb current with back eddies adding some tricks. In the upwind leg of the second race Kelsib got around the mark before the wind died and left the rest of us drifting away and waiting for something to happen. Looking behind us we saw Miss Tickle coming up from behind with the jib pole out running downwind in a decent easterly! Artemis threw up their whisker pole and managed to get enough of a puff to get the inside track around the mark after which Bluebird touched and had to do a turn. We sailed upwind on the downwind leg and had a fine downwind finish after rounding the leeward mark. After switching the course end for end, we started another race in the Easterly and were finished at the leeward mark as the wind again died. Six Cal’s were out: Rock n’ Roll, Miss Tickle, La Galetea, Kelsib, Bluebird, and Artemis, plus the Final Merry Crew was on the Committee boat. Winter Around the Buoys Race #3, January
17, 2010
Sunday racing on Jan 17th gave us some really high class close exciting racing. Unperturbed by forecasts of 30knt winds Cal 20's showed up in their usual enthusiastic numbers. Winds did eventually build to 15 to 25 knots. Because division one started after the Cal 20's in our last race, we rounded marks along side and even crossed the finish line together. Some Cal 20's were seen planing down wind in the surf, along side the big boats.

Crafting a Cal 20 Rudder

Peter Coy: took this photo of David Bell working on his super fast rudder. It is a very time intensive task and the line up of people wanting him to make more has started.

3, 2010
Seven Cal's were out for another great day of racing on January 3rd. The wind was moderate from the north-east and there was an ebb current running through the bay. The committee did a great job of getting us three twice around races. More pictures can be found here.

Johnstone Reef Race , January
2, 2010
The following race report is from Peter Vivian, Alga-Y.
Johnstone rf. Race was a textbook perfect day for winter racing with a Northeast breeze about 10 knots. We started at Anchor as per usual and when gun went we hoisted sails, weighed anchor and were off with a run down the bay. We opted not to bother with Spinnakers this year partly as I had a crew unfamiliar with the drill. At Ten Mile Pt we hit a huge ebb tide which made it a particular challenge in a Cal 20 as we do not have much reserve speed to buck such a strong current. This had us change places with Kelsib a couple of times but eventually Kelsib won out by taking the inshore route and got to Johnstone Rf significantly ahead of us. We still enjoyed a great day of sailing and some good camraderie in the Chartroom where we exchanged a few sea stories over refreshments and snacks. The only damper was that more of our good fleet did not make the effort to come out and join in.
Winter Around the Buoys Race #1, December
13, 2009
We had seven Cal 20s out for the first RTB winter race despite a discouraging forecast of little wind and a mixture of rain and snow. The reality was much better than predicted, with a nice 5-10 knot wind and very little precipitation, and the sun even made an appearance as we were sailing back to the dock. The race committee did a great job of managing the course despite the frequent changes in wind direction, getting us three great races. The results can be found here.

Cal 20 Table at the RVYC Awards Night
Christmas Party
We had a great time at the Cal 20 Christmas Party on December 5th with a large attendance of past, present and future Cal 20 sailors. A highlight of the evening was the British Columbia place name quiz ably hosted by Peter and Jenny Coy. Assistance from Anna Roberts to find the pins was greatly appreciated. Although we couldn't grasp all the intricate details, the game rules and functioning of the applause-o-meter have obviously been years in development and have been honed to perfection. After many rounds and to the surprise of all attendees it became clear that Trevor Hayward's table had accumulated a massive amount of points and swept the event away. Protest flags and calls for recourse from other tables were unsuccessful in changing the result. In another surprise move the winning box of chocolates was plundered by the kids of Table 1. As an added bonus we were treated to a great photo display from Andre Madding, which reminded us of the fantastic sailing that was had earlier in the day. Many thanks to the RVYC staff who provided a wonderful meal and environment for our annual festivity.

Spinnaker Series
There were eight Cal 20s out for the Spinnaker Series on December 5th. The 20 knot winds made for lots of fun flying that devilish sail. By all accounts there were more than a few twists, lost sheets and halyards to be had. In the end Bluebird showed us the way and took away the Beer Can Trophy for the 3rd year in a row. See our trophy section for more information on this award. The image below is the gps track from Alga-Y imported to Google Earth. Thanks the Alga-Y crew Steve Allen for providing this. Pictures from the Spinakker series are on our Flickr Page.

Fall Around the Buoys Race #4, November
29, 2009
Five Cal 20’s (Kelsib, Artemis, Rock n’ Roll, Alga-Y, and La Galatea) came out for the last day of the fall series racing on November 29th. We had a nice 15+ knot wind from the south-east, some warmish temperatures and not a drop of rain – the makings for a perfect November race day. The committee got us three races on a W2 (twice around windward-leeward) course up the length of Cadboro Bay and out into Oak Bay. The weather over the last few days left the bay more choppy than usual, so our foredeck crew had to be nimble during the mark roundings and gybes. We had many close crossings up and down the course, and a few places were won and lost at the mark roundings. Congratulations to Tom and Steve Lowden for winning the fall series and for their three bullets today!
Fall Around the Buoys Race #3, November
15, 2009
The forecast for a
25-30 knot south-easterly blow and heavy rain for our 3rd
fall RTB race day on November 15th turned out to be
much less dramatic than advertised, with 10-15 knots and an
occasional drizzle, setting us up for some great close racing from
the start line off the RVYC docks out into Oak Bay. Left to right
in the picture below are Rock n' Roll, Long Shot (partly hidden),
Final Merry, Kelsib and Bluebird dipping down to the line.
Artemis' crew were on the committee boat.

Fall Around the Buoys Race #2, November 1, 2009
Seven Cal 20's were out for our 2nd Fall series race day on November 1st. The weather couldn't have been better with a warm sunny day for all to enjoy. The wind was in the 5-10 knot range from the south east and there was a moderate flood current sweeping through the bay. The committee boat was set up off of Spoon Bay on the west side of Cadboro Bay and the windward mark was roughly half way between Jemmy Jones and Cattle Point. Tacking close in to the rocks up the west side of Cadboro Bay to towards Cattle Point to avoid the current was the order of the day. At Cattle Point, where it appeared we were well overstood, we could bang the corner onto starboard and cross to the windward mark. Kelsib was well tuned in to achieve two firsts for the day, and Artemis got it right in the 2nd race.
Thermopylae Regatta, October 24-25 2009
Eight boats raced in the Thermopylae Regatta round the buoys Cal 20 division. Congratulations to Kelsib, Alga-Y and Final Merry for the 1st through 3rd places.
